The Story of the Woodrow Marble

It began in a quarry in Rutland, Vermont in the mid-1920s, traveled to Dallas by train in about 1927, was on the walls of Woodrow for about 84 years, and now it is looking for a home…with you!

At the same time construction started on the new addition on campus, extensive renovations of parts of the original building also began. The Woodrow Alumni Association became aware that marble, original to the school, was being removed and stacked at the construction site. The large sheets, we were told, were going to be used to replace broken and patched pieces on the first floor, which was being kept historically accurate. (Floors two and three - not so much!)  However, the broken pieces were destined for the landfill, and we could not let that happen!

Kathy Kilmer Moak (former Alumni Assn. Board member, Class of ‘67) and Mike Barnes (also Class of ‘67) volunteered to undertake a marble rescue mission.

The purpose was threefold:

  • to preserve school history (details about the exact type of marble, origin, etc.);
  • to allow alumni to own a personalized piece of Woodrow history; and
  • to raise money to benefit Woodrow through the Alumni Assn. (WWHSAA, a 501c3, Non-Profit Organization).

After going through all of the appropriate channels (several times), we were given permission to remove the broken pieces. With the help of Rick Ferguson (Class of ‘72), we removed and stored the broken pieces. After online research (DISD had no records, naturally), we discovered the marble is Neshobe Gray Clouded, from the Vermont Marble Co. in Proctor, VT. Mike even ended up traveling there and obtained a letter of authentication!

Do you own a piece of Woodrow Marble? We would love to see it! Please take a picture of your piece and send it to us! alumni@wwhsaa.org
