A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WOODROW HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

Generations of students remember the beloved directors Marca Lee Bircher and Patricia Hardman, who arrived in 1975 and elevated the program with ambitious productions. They pioneered elaborate sets and stagecraft—famously creating onstage rain for the 1994 Singin’ in the Rain and flying monkeys in the 1998 Wizard of Oz. They also founded the award-winning show choir Variations, launched in honor of the school’s 50th anniversary, which continues to thrive today.

The school’s 75th anniversary marked another era of innovation with John Beaird (theatre) and Sean Morrison (choir). Their productions ranged from contemporary hits like Les Misérables and City of Angels to classics like Fiddler on the Roof and The Sound of Music. Beaird also introduced the tradition of the annual Fall Play and expanded Woodrow’s participation in community and UIL competitions, bringing home numerous nominations and awards.

In the years that followed, leaders such as Kent Ellington, Larissa Kiefer, and Albert Torres guided the program, until alumna Katie Cunningham Anderson returned in 2015 to direct both choir and musicals. She established Bella Voce (Varsity Treble Choir) and expanded Woodrow’s choral offerings before passing the baton in 2019 to Eli Lopez, who led both choir and musicals.

Today, the program is directed by Jenci Pavageaux, who joined in 2018 and worked alongside longtime director Beaird until his retirement in 2024. The choir program was strengthened by the arrival of Nicole Dickerson in 2022, whose first production was Frozen Jr.Laura Garcia joined the Theatre Department in 2024.

Together, these directors have nurtured thousands of students, providing world-class instruction and mentorship while creating a legacy of artistry, tradition, and excellence that continues to define the Woodrow Wilson High School Musical.
